WHAT TO DO DURING THE 1ST TEN DAYS OF DHUL-HIJJAH:

Fasting the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah

One of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) “used to fast the nine days of Dhul-Hijjah...” [Ahmad – sahih according to al-Albani].

Fasting the Day of Arafah (9th day of Dhul-Hijjah)

Narrated Abu Qatadah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:  Fasting on the Day of Arafah is an expiation (of the sins) for two years, the year before it and the year following it [Muslim].

Performing Good Deeds and Making Dhikr

Ibn 'Umar (radiy Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There aren't any days greater, nor any days in which deeds done in them are more beloved to Allaah Most High, than these ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah). So, increase in them the saying of Tahleel (Laa-ilaaha-ill-Allaah), and Takbeer (Allaahu-Akbar) and Tahmeed (al-hamdu-lillaah)." [Ahmad].

Offering the Udhiya (Sacrifice)

Abdullah bin Umar (radiy Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stayed in Madina for 10 years and he used to make the sacrifice (every year) [Ahmad, Tirmidhi].

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The one who is intending to offer a sacrifice it is a sunnah to refrain from removing anything from his/her skin, hair or nails from new moon of Dhul-Hijjah until the sacrifice is done.

Umm Salamah (radiy Allahu anha) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If you see the Hilaal (new moon) of Dhul-Hijjah, and any one of you wants to make a sacrifice, then he should not cut (anything) from his hair and his nails." [Muslim].
